Review of my Visit
Mori no Irodori is conveniently located for both train and car access. You can get there by bus from Tama Sakai Station (Keio Sagamihara Line) or Hashimoto Station (JR Yokohama Line, JR Sagami Line, and Keio Sagamihara Line). There’s also plenty of parking space.
The moment I stepped into the modern Japanese-style building, I felt a sense of excitement — my expectations were high! On the other hand, to be honest, I worried a bit about the view since the name “Mori no Irodori” (Colors of the Forest) had me expecting lush mountains or rolling hills… but I was pleasantly surprised.
That day, I actually did an onsen hotspring double-header: visited Roten Garden, another natural hot spring spa, in the morning, then headed to Mori no Irodori in the afternoon. They’re only about 15 minutes apart by car, making this combo totally doable for onsen lovers!
Relaxing/Extraordinary Atmosphere: 4.5 points (out of 5)
It’s not like the grand mountain views of Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu or Seoto-no-Yu, but when you lie down in the outdoor “relaxation bath,” you feel surrounded by the forest. At night, the atmosphere becomes even more magical, offering a true escape from everyday life in Tokyo.
Quality of the Hot Spring: 4 points (out of 5)
This onsen in Tokyo’s Machida area offers a rare and authentic “kuroyu” (black hotspring), one of the best hotspring types in the Kanto region. It’s colored by natural plant-based organic matter and is known for its skin-smoothing and moisturizing effects.
The water type is sodium bicarbonate chloride spring, which retains heat and keeps your skin hydrated — especially appreciated in the colder months. Among Tokyo sento and onsen spots, this is one of the most impressive in terms of water quality.
Various Baths Experiences: 5 points (out of 5)
Mori no Irodori and nearby Roten Garden both offer rich bath experiences. I personally visited on a day when the Japanese-style outdoor bath was in rotation, but they alternate styles, so you can enjoy both Japanese and Western styles by visiting again.
Bath Types & Features
Outdoor bath (natural hotspring):
Stylish Japanese-modern design with Western touches. Open-air and relaxing, complete with a hotter bath for extra warmth.
Lying-down bath:
Surrounded by trees, it lets you feel the breeze and unwind deeply.
Carbonated spring:
Fine bubbles envelop the body, promoting circulation and relieving fatigue.
Indoor baths:
Multiple tubs with different temperatures — perfect for choosing your comfort level.
Sauna (both men’s and women’s):
A great way to detox and sweat it out.
Facility : 5 points (out of 5)
Clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed for a wide age range. Highlights include:
Relaxation Area: With manga, massage chairs, and reclining seats — ideal for long stays.
Dining Area: Spacious enough for group dining.
Central Garden Courtyard: Surrounded by greenery, perfect for cooling down after a bath (I had an ice cream here!).
Food: 5 points (out of 5)
Among Tokyo’s best super sento facilities, the food here more than average. I had French fries, Napolitan pasta, and a stir-fried veggie set meal — all were delicious! A satisfying meal is the cherry on top of a relaxing onsen experience.
TOTAL: 4.45 (out of 5)
This is the highest score I’ve ever given in a hot spring review so far! Everything — from the baths and food to relaxation spaces — is designed with care and quality. It’s a place you could easily spend an entire day just reading manga, eating great food, and soaking in different baths.
Recommended For:
Anyone with access to a car (ample free parking)
Visitors using Hashimoto or Tama Sakai stations
People looking to fully relax for the whole day
Travelers who want a Tokyo day-trip hot spring that feels like a mini-vacation
Even short-term visitors can enjoy this facility for under ¥1,000 on weekends!
If you’re more into intense sauna or stone sauna experiences, it might not be your top pick — but for everything else, it’s one of the best sento and hotspring experiences in the Tokyo area.
Highly recommended for your next onsen/natural hotspring visit in Tama!
